  1. Well … I wish you’d had as good an experience of ’em as I did. Always pisses me off to hear about people going through this kind of thing. I found that being totally up-front on the ‘phone was what did it for me – you know, “I did get hysterical with the bloke I talked to yesterday, and you’ll find that on my file: but I’m pretty ancient, and on the pension…” They seem to respond well to you acknowledging part of the blame, basically. 🙂

  2. I feel your pain… I had an account for years and all was well, my credit card would get an extension date but the card number would remain the same. No problems.

Then the bank changed the credit cards, new features, chip and pin etc so when my card expired I got a new card, new card number. It worked almost everywhere (we had trouble in France with hotels running machines only for old cards) and then came Paypal…

I see some material I want in Ebay and I’d like to pay for it. Easy right? Wrong.

Error message: old credit card number is not valid. That’s correct, so I update my card details (takes forever) and right at the very end of the process: Error message: ” new card details not accepted: we already have card details on file for your account.”

Duh. yes you DO have card details stupid computer, but the card is old and expired more than a year ago and your own system even *knows* it’s invalid. Just accept the new one please.

Thus ensues the process where you try twice more with the same frustrating process and even more frustrating results. … and then decide to give up before you throw your computer out of the window.

My only solution was to contact the seller and ask to pay the funds directly to their mail account via paypal. This worked last time I used it, but that was several years ago because the stress involved in updating my card in order to use PayPal effectively put me off using it altogether.

Good luck with getting your PayPal mess sorted out. Can you get the mail delivered to someone who could pass it on to you? That might be a first step.

  3. I have done very little business with PayPal and have had no problems but thanks for the warning. I find a lot of frustrations on the internet and I often don’t do business with an internet merchant because their process gets too complicated or they insist on too much information. The ones who insist on me opening an account just to make a single purchase never sell me anything. Thanks for visiting my blog and please come back again.

  4. Hi i understand the frustration, it is complicated and not easy to setup but it gets better once all is working i have now been using Paypal for 2 years and we had 500% increase in users and it just growing specially in australia. As customer if you are online shopper i think this is the best option in the market plus you get money refund guarantee ? which none of the banks offer if you didnt receive your product etc

  5. Don’t know why they keep making changes. I haven’t had any problems – yet – though I know several people who have the same experience as you, ufortunately. Thanks for the post.

  6. PayPal will NEVER ask for information to be updated (such as your address). Always ignore these messages or forward them to spam@paypal.com. I get these all the time and I ignore them. The only time I’ve ever been OFFICIALLY contacted by PayPal is when the credit card linked to my account had changed and needed updating. All the other e-mails I got were spam-related. They are not going to all of a sudden lose your address and need to rebuild their files! That’s a red flag right there!

  7. Paypal is somewhat predatory. Their worst thing is when you select to use a credit card; they try and try to change your payment choice and, if you’re not careful, you end up paying with your bank account.

This works to THEIR advantage and can cost you in high fees, when your checking account overdrafts.

  8. Your experience nothing new with Paypal.. i had the same Problems , Got a fraudulent email from Paypal stating the money for my item sold was posted in my account and that in order for the funds to be released I had to send the item with a tracking # immediately. So I did ( Like a Fool)
I never got the Money lost the Item I had for sale and when I called Paypal they Oh no its not real..there is no funds in your account pending and there is know-one by that name registered transferring money from there account to your’s …I told Paypal about the Authentic email even sent it to them…but alas..they told me the Paypal control user id was not one of theirs. so im out of my money due to me and out of my Product..I had a Business Account with Paypal …including a C/C and Banking information..I closed that Account and then months later I went back and they wouldn’t let me reopen my account nor would they let me put my banking information into my New account..so..Paypal looses out on my Business..THEY USE TO HAVE GREAT SERVICE NOW THEIR TERRIBLE!!! here is the link I posted about the Fraud.it posted this warning on craigslist.

  9. I have been using PayPal for a few years for Skype and online purchasing and have had not oe problem. In fact I have found the convenience perfect since I have no need for credit cards!
    🙂

  10. I wish I could offer something to help you with PayPal, but I don’t use it. I do get spam messages periodically telling me that my PayPal account is being closed. Since I don’t have a PayPal account, I know it’s the tricksters at work. I stopped by to say thanks for visiting and the like of my post “Determined to Stay Green”.

  11. The two times, a few years apart, that I signed up for (actually the second time re-instated) a PayPal account, it asked me for my checking a/c info. I refused to give that information; I was able to use it anyway. I wasn’t asked again. I used PayPal for a while (purchasing, no selling), but I’m innately suspicious of using anything like that for too long, so I “closed” the account–I had to call to have them remove my credit card info though. Presumably they did.
Thanks for stopping by my blog! Happy New Year (no religious preference necessary).

  12. I agree with cindydryer, many times you will get spam just notify them so they can go after them. We do that with hotmail too when we think someone is phishing for information that isn;’t real. I have been with paypal for 8 years and haven’t had any trouble with them. I like it that sometimes if you don’t have enough money you can use your credit card instead. I did not use my personal chg acct I opened one ;that was just for paypal use that way I could keep track of what is going on.

  13. PayPal, Facebook and WordPress should leave things alone and quit trying to change what everyone is either just beginning to get used to, or were already happy with in the first place. I share your pain re: PP, and no longer do business with them. If a company won’t allow other means of payment so be it. Enough said.

On a more upbeat note, Ellen, I like your site and thanks for liking one recent post of mine, “Twas the Night Before”. Happy New Year!

  14. I cannot remember how long I have used PayPal but I have never had any problems with it. Do I get spam trying to get my money? Yes, I get those for Facebook as well and I do not have an account there.
I am glad you liked my personal post for the First Sunday of Christmas. Thanks for stopping by.

  15. Thanks for visiting my blog. I have wondered about PayPal as I want to open an Etsy shop and that is the way it seems people always pay. I did have a Pay Pal credit card a few years back, but now when I pay by PP, I always use another credit card. I have received that spam you are talking about–saying I bought something that I didn’t and it is very frustrating until I realized it was spam. How you know what’s real and what’s not? Very difficult and I hate their statements–can’t figure them out.

  16. Hello there! This blog post could not be written much better!
Going through this article reminds me of my previous roommate!
He continually kept preaching about this. I am going to send this information
to him. Pretty sure he will have a very good read. Thank you for sharing!
